Mediation and Sports law: The role of Mediation in the resolution of disputes in Sport

GEMME Ireland hosted a successful hybrid event on Tuesday, 13 June 2023, in Dublin, exploring the theme of mediation in the resolution of disputes in sport. An engaging Q & A followed the presentations by the speakers.

The event was chaired by The Honourable Mr Justice Conor Dignam, Judge of the High Court, who is also a committee member of GEMME Ireland and a former board member of Community Law and Mediation.

Speakers: David Casserly, BL, and Rory Hanniffy, BL.

David Casserly is a barrister who specialises in the area of sports law and international arbitration, particularly before the international Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne. David is an accredited mediator, former Head of Mediation at the CAS, and Judicial Chair of Sport Dispute Solutions Ireland’s mediation (and arbitration) service.

Rory Hanniffy is a barrister who was in practice at the Bar for over 17 years until his appointment to the semi-judicial position of County Registrar for Counties Laois and Offaly in 2021. He was a renowned hurler having played at senior level for Offaly where he won many awards and honours. On his retirement as a hurler he became involved in the Disputes Resolution Authority (DRA) in 2017 which has been described as the GAA’s version of the International Court of Arbitration. Rory is now secretary of the DRA and actively involved in its dispute resolution process.
